Joint ENARD:ISGAN Workshop “International Knowledge Exchange of Smart Grid Demonstration Projects”, held Scheveningen, The Netherlands, Tuesday 18th October 2011.
Some 70 plus experts and national delegates, drawn from 20 countries, met in this Workshop, jointly convened by the ENARD and ISGAN Implementing Agreements.The Workshop featured an opening address, provided by Erik ten Elshof, Senior Policy Advisor for the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, followed by complementary “scene setting” presentations, delivered by Stig Goethe and Michele De Nigris, Chairs of the ENARD and ISGAN Implementing Agreements, respectively.
The Workshop then developed to address its principal theme, in relation to international knowledge exchange in relation to Smart Grid demonstration programmes, via a Session featuring a series of presentations in relation to Netherlands, European, United States and Korean Smart Grid demonstration programme activities.
Further complementary presentations followed, in relation to market and regulatory aspects, prior to the basis for the development of the proposed ENARD Annex V, in support of the ISGAN Annex 1 work programme being presented. This was then followed by a complementary presentation from the ISGAN perspective.
The Workshop featured extensive discussion and dialogue, via its morning and afternoon panel sessions, with some of the key messages to emerge being noted in terms of the clear requirement for customer engagement and involvement, the need to recognize and address societal considerations, Smart Meters, seen as an essential first step towards the Smart Grid and the essential role for electrical energy storage. Further considerations were noted in terms of the convergence of interests between the ICT and power utilities sectors, the crucial need for open access and inter-operability, benefit:cost justifications and the essential role for regulation.
